In The Bengali, filmmaker Kavery Kaul takes an African-American woman to India in search of her family’s past. Her grandfather was Bengali, part of the lost history of the first Indians who arrived in the US in the late 19th century. Does he still have family there? Did he really own land? This boldly different encounter between East and West puts the light on the longing of many people to connect with their heritage and the stories passed on from generation to generation.
